Polyester vs Cotton — Which Fabric Is Right for Your Wardrobe?

The fabric debate is older than streetwear itself. Cotton or polyester — which one belongs in your wardrobe? The honest answer is both. But they serve different purposes, and knowing the difference helps you buy better.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural fibre. It breathes well, softens with wear, and has a weight and hand feel that polyester can't replicate. At higher GSM — 180gsm and above — it becomes a structural fabric: it holds its shape, resists pilling, and develops character over time. This is why heavyweight cotton is the standard for premium basics. It's the fabric you reach for when longevity matters.

The trade-off: cotton absorbs moisture rather than wicking it, and it can shrink if washed incorrectly. It also wrinkles more easily than synthetic alternatives.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fibre. It's lightweight, moisture-resistant, and holds its shape without ironing. At lower GSM — like the 145gsm used in the Donestate Boxy Long Sleeve Shirt — it's a breathable, easy-wear fabric that moves with the body and dries quickly. It's the fabric you reach for when you want something clean, low-maintenance, and consistent wash after wash.

The trade-off: polyester doesn't breathe as naturally as cotton in high heat, and it lacks the tactile depth of a heavyweight natural fibre.

Which Should You Choose?

For foundational pieces — tees, hoodies, sweatshirts — heavyweight cotton is the better long-term investment. For layering pieces, lightweight shirts, and everyday wear where ease matters, polyester delivers. The best wardrobes use both, intentionally.

At Donestate, both fabrics are used where they make sense — not interchangeably.
