The GSM Guide — Why Fabric Weight Changes Everything

When you pick up a garment, you feel it before you see it. That weight in your hands — the way it drapes, the way it holds its shape — is determined by one number: GSM.

Here's what it means, and why it matters more than most brands will tell you.

What GSM Actually Is

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It's the standard measure of fabric density — how much material is packed into each square metre of cloth. The higher the number, the heavier and denser the fabric.

It's not a quality rating on its own. A 100gsm fabric isn't inferior to a 470gsm fabric — they're built for different purposes. But GSM tells you everything about how a garment will perform, feel, and age.

The Spectrum — From Lightweight to Heavyweight

100–150gsm — Lightweight
Breathable, fluid, and close to the skin. Moves easily and layers well. The Donestate Boxy Plaid Long Sleeve Shirt sits at 100gsm — built for ease and layering, not structure.

200–280gsm — Mid-weight
The everyday range. Enough body to hold a silhouette without feeling heavy. The Boxy Vintage Wash Denim Shirt at 230gsm lives here — structured enough to drape cleanly, light enough to wear open as a layer.

300–400gsm — Heavy
This is where garments start to hold their own shape. The 360gsm Wide Leg Jeans fall in this range — mid-weight for denim, with enough density to give the wide-leg silhouette real presence.

400gsm+ — Premium Heavyweight
Reserved for pieces built to last. The 425gsm Denim Shorts and 470gsm Wide Leg Jeans sit here. At this weight, denim has structure, drape, and durability that lighter fabrics simply can't replicate. You feel the difference immediately.

Why Weight Changes How a Garment Ages

Lightweight fabrics wear in quickly — they soften fast and lose structure over time. That's not a flaw, it's a characteristic. But heavyweight fabrics age differently. They break in slowly, developing creases and fades that are specific to how you wear them. A 470gsm denim jean at two years looks better than it did on day one — the wear patterns are yours.

This is why Donestate builds at the heavier end of the spectrum. The pieces are designed to outlast trends and improve with use.

Why the Same Fabric Feels Different at Different Weights

The denim in this drop spans 230gsm to 470gsm — all cotton-blend, all vintage washed, but completely different in hand and behaviour. The 230gsm shirt moves with you. The 470gsm jeans hold their shape around you. Same wash process, same construction logic, different weight — different garment entirely.

That range is intentional. Not every piece needs to be heavyweight. But every piece should be the right weight for what it's doing.

The Short Version

GSM is the single most useful number when evaluating a garment. It tells you how it will feel, how it will drape, how it will age, and what it was built for. At Donestate, every fabric weight is a deliberate choice — not a cost decision.
