Why We Only Do Heavyweight: Our Commitment to Durability

We get asked this a lot: why only heavyweight?

It’s a fair question. Lightweight blanks are cheaper to produce, easier to source, and more comfortable in warm weather. So why do we build everything at 300 GSM and above?

Because we’re not building for summer. We’re building for years.

The Problem With Lightweight

Most basics on the market sit between 140–180 GSM. They’re fine when new. But after a few washes, the story changes.

The fabric thins. The shape drops. The collar stretches. What felt like a clean, structured tee starts to look like something you sleep in.

That’s not a flaw — it’s a feature. Lightweight garments are designed to be replaced. The business model depends on it.

What Heavyweight Actually Means

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It’s the most direct measure of fabric density and weight.

  • 140–180 GSM — standard fast fashion tee. Thin, soft, short lifespan.
  • 180–250 GSM — mid-weight. Better than average, but still prone to distortion over time.
  • 280–320 GSM — heavyweight. Holds structure, resists shrinkage, drapes properly.
  • 320–400 GSM — premium heavyweight. What we work with. Built to last years, not seasons.

The difference isn’t just feel. It’s how the garment behaves after 50 washes. After two years of regular wear. After it becomes your go-to.

Why It Matters for Fit

Heavyweight fabric doesn’t just last longer — it holds its shape. That matters especially for oversized silhouettes.

A lightweight oversized tee collapses on the body. The shoulders roll forward, the hem loses its drop, and the whole silhouette falls apart. Heavyweight fabric maintains the structure the designer intended — the extended shoulder, the clean hem, the boxy chest.

You’re not just buying durability. You’re buying the fit, preserved.

The Cost of Doing It Right

Heavyweight fabric costs more. Production takes longer. Sampling is more involved. Shipping is heavier.

We absorb those costs because the alternative — cutting corners on fabric to hit a lower price point — produces a garment we wouldn’t wear ourselves.

Every Donestate piece is priced to reflect what it actually costs to make it properly. Not what the market expects a basic to cost.

One Standard, Every Piece

We don’t offer a lightweight option. We don’t do a “summer range” in 160 GSM. Every piece we make meets the same standard — because we believe your wardrobe deserves consistency, not compromise.

If you’re looking for a disposable basic, we’re not the right brand. If you’re building a wardrobe that lasts, you’re in the right place.
